Paperpile

Available Through the Graduate School

Manage and Cite Your References with Paperpile

Paperpile is a modern reference manager built for the Google Workspace tools ÍøÆØÃÅ already runs on. Collect papers with one click, sync PDFs to Google Drive, and cite directly in Google Docs and Word. The Graduate School provides Paperpile access for ÍøÆØÃÅ faculty and students.

How to Get Access

Signing up takes about a minute, and your ÍøÆØÃÅ email address is your key.

  1. Open the ÍøÆØÃÅ invitation link in Chrome on a desktop or laptop:
  2. Sign in with Google using your UCA email address
  3. Install the Paperpile Chrome extension when prompted, and you’re ready to start collecting papers

Use Chrome on a desktop or laptop to sign up

Paperpile signup currently works only in Google Chrome on a desktop computer. After your account is set up, you can also use the Paperpile apps for iOS and Android and the plugin for Microsoft Word.

What Paperpile Does

If you have wrestled with clunky desktop citation software, emailed documents back and forth, or lost track of a folder full of cryptically named PDFs, Paperpile is the fix. It lives in your browser and integrates with the Google account you already use at ÍøÆØÃÅ.

Organize Your Whole Library

Keep thousands of papers tidy with folders, colored labels, and stars, and search the entire library instantly by keyword, author, journal, or year. Paperpile also flags incomplete references, looks up missing data online, and resolves duplicates with one click.

Collect Papers with One Click

The Chrome extension saves references, PDFs, and even supplementary files directly from Google Scholar, PubMed, ArXiv, and thousands of publisher sites, with accurate metadata pulled in automatically. You can also search major databases from inside Paperpile itself.

PDFs Synced to Google Drive

Paperpile downloads PDFs, names them sensibly, and syncs them to your Google Drive, so your collection is available on every device. It can even turn an existing folder of unorganized PDFs on your hard drive into a structured library.

Cite in Google Docs

Insert in-text citations as you write and format your bibliography in APA, MLA, Chicago, or thousands of journal-specific styles. Switch styles anytime and the whole document updates.

Annotate and Highlight

Highlight the important parts of your papers in different colors and add comments right where they belong. Print clean summaries of your highlights and notes when it’s time to write.

Share and Collaborate

Create shared folders to build a library with your lab, committee, or co-authors. Private sharing links work even for people without Paperpile accounts.

Paperpile stores more than 30 reference types, so books, conference papers, websites, preprints, patents, and datasets all get accurate citations, not just journal articles. It signs in securely through your Google account and never accesses your password or your personal Drive files.

Where Paperpile Earns Its Keep

Theses and Dissertations

A dissertation can cite hundreds of sources across several years of work. Build the library as you read, and by the time you write, the bibliography assembles itself in the style your program requires.

Co-Authored Manuscripts

Everyone edits the same Google Doc in real time and everyone can add and edit citations. Co-authors only need the free Google Docs add-on, not a Paperpile license, so collaborators outside ÍøÆØÃÅ can participate fully.

Journal Submissions

Reformatting citations for a new journal after a rejection is one of academia’s least rewarding chores. With thousands of journal-specific styles built in, switching takes seconds instead of an afternoon.

Rescuing a Messy PDF Folder

Years of downloaded PDFs with names like “fulltext(3).pdf”? Point Paperpile at the folder and it identifies the papers, looks up the metadata, flags duplicates, and files everything into a searchable library.

A Complete Research Workflow

Paperpile pairs naturally with , which is available to all ÍøÆØÃÅ faculty and students. Use Consensus to discover and evaluate the research, then use Paperpile to collect, organize, annotate, and cite it. Together they cover the research workflow from first question to final bibliography.

Your ÍøÆØÃÅ email is all you need.
